When Should I See a Neurologist if I'm Having Seizures?

A person resting, unwell

Deciding whether to see a neurologist for your seizures can be difficult. Neurologists specialize in diagnosing and treating disorders of the brain and nervous system, and many seizure symptoms can be managed with the right care. Community Neuro Center recommends speaking with a neurologist if you have any of the following.

Headaches and migraines

Everyone gets headaches, from mild to severe, and they can have many causes, such as too much screen time, dehydration, or lack of sleep. It may be time to see a neurologist if you have:

  • Severe or disabling headaches
  • Headaches that require daily medication
  • Headaches you wake up with each day
  • Nausea, dizziness, or vomiting with your headaches
  • Sensitivity to light and noise alongside the pain

Vertigo or dizziness

See a neurologist if you experience:

  • Loss of balance
  • Feeling faint or like you are floating
  • A spinning sensation with no clear cause

Unusual seizures

If you have not been diagnosed with epilepsy but are having seizure symptoms, consult a neurologist promptly, because a seizure can sometimes be a sign of another serious condition. Any seizure lasting more than five minutes is a medical emergency; call 911.

Memory issues

Occasional forgetfulness is normal, but if memory problems interfere with daily life or work, speak with a neurologist. Difficulty speaking, confusion, disorientation, and frequent memory lapses are also reasons to seek care.

This list is not exhaustive. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, request an appointment or call us at (813) 684-5880.
